

A Placer County deputy shot a driver who was dragging him with his vehicle at a Thunder Valley Casino parking lot during an attempted traffic stop, officials said Monday.The deputy was trying to “further control the situation” with a man who was already detained in the east parking lot of the casino around 1:20 a.m., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. “During the time he was making contact with the driver, he had detained the driver and was leaning into the driver’s-side door to try and gain control of the driver,” said Angela Musallam, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. When the deputy leaned inside the driver’s door, the man hit the gas to drive away, which led to the deputy being dragged.”He put his foot on the accelerator and zoomed off and he took the deputy with him,” Musallam said. “He dragged the deputy for a short distance.”The sheriff’s office said the deputy, “in fear of being killed or significantly injured,” then shot the man, a Sacramento resident in his late-20s. The man voluntarily pulled over near Fiddyment Road and Athens Avenue. “He was taken into custody by Placer County deputies who immediately rendered medical aid to the suspect before placing him in the ambulance to be taken to a nearby hospital,” Musallam said.The man was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy was also hospitalized and will be OK.The suspect’s name and charges have not been released. It is unknown why the man was pulled over by the deputy, who is now on administrative leave, the sheriff’s office said.The Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office and the Professional Standards Unit are investigating the shooting.
